Man About the House

Man about the House
40 years ago I collected the Man about the House series of postcards by artist Robert Pearce. I loved the political and subversive messages incorporated with satire and the queer view of gender & domesticity via the use of collage images. This series, a part of the Dingle Hughes Collection, were borrowed by the Shoalhaven Regional Gallery to use as the key art works in an exhibition to celebrate the World Pride event being held in Sydney. A number of artists, including myself and Natalie McDonagh, were invited to respond to Pearce's art with their own art works, that would be included in the "Man about the House" exhibition.
In responding to these works my medium had to be collage but ideas for content and the setting for that content went straight to the idea of gardens which were “about the house”, had strong domestic focus and involved shared and separate gender roles. The use of images from magazines of similar periods to the postcards and hyper-real comic colour provides other links. The collages that I produced were scanned and then 12 colour ink jet printed as a single edition print series on art rag paper . The actual collages were then destroyed so that this print series  is a unique art work.
The Man about the House series of 12 postcards are now housed at the Shoalhaven Regional Gallery on Permanent Loan from the Dingle Hughes Collection, pending the time when the bequest will take effect, when they will be formally accessed into the Regional Collection.
